Russian Muslims and Jihad: Lifestyle Choice or Revolution?

  • CSIS 1616 Rhode Island Avenue Northwest Washington, DC, 20036 United States (map)

In recent years, a growing number of Chechens, Dagestanis, Uzbeks and individuals and groups from other Muslim communities in the former Soviet Union, including many from prosperous and well-educated cohorts in Russia and Europe, have chosen the direction of Jihad. Why are Russian Muslims radicalizing and why do some of them turn to violence? Why do others not? To understand this phenomenon it is crucial to unpack the various ways in which Jihadist ideas manifest in the former Soviet Union, including both the Caucasus Emirate and ISIS, and how they draw recruits. Denis Sokolov, a Visiting Fellow with the CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program, will present the results of his research into the radicalization of Russia’s Muslim communities and discuss potential policy responses.
