Islamic Law and Human Rights

  • Newseum 555 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest Washington, DC, 20001 United States (map)

Questions of human rights compatibility with sharia have become more pressing after the Arab uprisings, with the increased political role played by Islamist parties. Global experts on freedom of belief, freedom of expression and the status of religious minorities in Islam will convene at the Newseum to discuss human rights violations by Arab states and non-state actors allegedly committed in the name of Islam.

This program features scholars associated with the Atlantic Council’s Islamic Law and Human Rights initiative, a project of the Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East.

This event is being co-sponsored by the Atlantic Council, with support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York  and the Religious Freedom Center of the Newseum Institute.
