The year 2016 was filled with massive humanitarian needs, stemming from conflict around the world. 65 million people worldwide have been forcible placed from their homes, the highest figure on record. Sexual violence in conflict is pervasive. And as the increase of attacks on healthcare and civilians increase, international humanitarian law remains as relevant, and needed, as ever. The ICRC's budget, in fact, reflecting this need, has grown 50% in the last five years. In 2017, the ICRC remains as committed as ever to protecting the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.
