ICRC president Peter Maurer, met earlier today with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.
Mr. Maurer arrived in Syria for a three-day visit yesterday.
During his 45 minute meeting with the Syrian president, Mr. Maurer discussed issues related to the protection of civilians, including the conduct of hostilities by Syrian forces.
The ICRC president also stressed the importance of adequate access to health care and basic necessities for people affected by the violence.
The discussion with Mr. al-Assad was "positive", said Mr. Maurer, who emphasized the necessity for the ICRC to improve its outreach to those in need across Syria.
The issue of ICRC visits to persons detained in Syria was also discussed.
Mr. Maurer also met with the Syrian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Later this morning, the ICRC president visited a Syrian Arab Red Crescent medical post in Mu'adhamiya, in the outskirts of Damascus. The facility is supported by our Damascus delegation.
