Dr. Abd-al-Razzaq Jbeiro, secretary-general of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and president of its Idlib branch was shot and killed yesterday while returning to his hometown from Damascus. His vehicle was clearly marked with the red crescent emblem.
We are of course shocked by this death and mourn Dr. Jbeiro, with whom our delegation in Damascus had been working closely.
Dr. Jbeiro's killing unfortunatly underscores the gravity of the situation currently prevailing in many parts of Syria.
As Geneva-based spokesman for the Near and Middle East Hicham Hassan explains, we are increasingly concerned about the ability of many civilians who live in areas affected by the violence to cope with the worsening economic situation and to access health services.
While our our team in Damascus continues to expend its action for those affected by the violence, discussions between the ICRC and Syrian authorities on detention visits to person arrested as a result of the unrest are at a standstill.
In the wake of Dr. Jbeiro's tragic death, our cooperation with and support for the Syrian Arab Red Crescent continues.
