Mali head of delegation Jean-Nicolas Marti describes the current offensive in the country's north in the context of an ongoing humanitarian crisis, with the fighting and aerial bombardments of the last five days worsening what was already an extremely difficult situation for tens of thousands of families.
ICRC teams are today present and active in Mopti, Gao, Tambouctou and Kidal. Their priorities, says Mr. Marti, are to care for the war wounded and assist displaced civilians, most of whom are currently staying with family members.
There are regional implications to the crisis, in particular for Algeria and in Mauritania, where some wounded are fleeing. While the situation on the ground remains fluid and proper assessments need to be made, the ICRC is already working with the Algerian and Mauritanian Red Crescent Societies to respond to a possible influx of refugees.
