A round up of news and links about the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, Gaza and Iraq.

Ukraine: Geneva/Kiev/Moscow (ICRC) – Staff from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited Luhansk on August 20 to find water and electricity supplies cut off because of damage to essential infrastructure. People hardly leave their homes for fear of being caught in the middle of ongoing fighting, with intermittent shelling into residential areas placing civilians at risk. Read our news release from August 21 here.

Gaza: Two ceasefires have brought some respite to civilians in Gaza and southern Israel, amid hope that a durable cessation of hostilities might occur. In Gaza, these breaks in the fighting have barely given people enough time to seek medical care, replenish food and water supplies, or search through the rubble for lost possessions. Read our comprehensive operational update here.

Iraq: The cities of Dohuk and Khanik are overwhelmed with families who have fled the fighting in Sinjar and elsewhere in northern Iraq. Many of them spent days without food and water on Mount Sinjar before finally finding refuge in schools, cultural centres and buildings under construction. The ICRC and the Iraqi Red Crescent have launched a major aid distribution in the two cities, and are providing food and medical aid in 12 provinces across Iraq. Watch the video below.
