ICRC director of operations on North American visit
ICRC director of operations Pierre Kraehenbuehl ends a week-long North American visit today.
One of Mr. Kraehenbuehl's objectives was to present our 2012 Emergency Appeals to North American donors, including the US State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Ottawa.
Mr. Kraehenbuehl also presented the 2012 Appeals to colleagues at the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross.
A second objective was for Mr. Kraehenbuehl to discuss operational files such as detention and conduct of hostilities with a range of high-level US government officials. Over five days, Mr. Kraehenbuehl met with representatives of the Department of State, the Department of Defense and the National Security Council to discuss issues related to Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan and other contexts.
Yesterday, Mr. Kraehenbuehl spoke to me about his visit, the ICRC-US relationship since 9/11 and the particular role of the Washington delegation.
