From the field - Taking stock of the humanitarian situation in northern Mali
Northern Mali is today controlled by various armed groups and the humanitarian situation in the region remains critical for tens of thousands of people.
Jean-Nicolas Marti heads our regional delegation in Niger, which also covers Mali.
He recently travelled to the northern city of Gao to meet with its elders and to discuss the humanitarian situation and action of the ICRC with the various groups that control the city and the area.
The ICRC in northern Mali has distributed much needed food aid since July. It has also supported Gao's main referral hospital, which plays a vital role for the entire region.
Mr. Marti describes an uncertain future for the people of northern Mali and an ICRC relief operation set to continue for months to come.
