ICRC Director of Operations Pierre Kraehenbuehl was in Washington last week to present our 2013 Emergency Appeals to the US government and to discuss humanitarian operations and files of mutual interest, including those related to detention in Afghanistan and at Guantanamo Bay.
As Mr. Kraehenbuehl explains in this exclusive Dispatch, the ICRC in Washington provides a tested mechanism for US authorities to be aware of and respond to pressing humanitarian issues in places like Afghanistan and Guantanamo.
While in Washington, Mr. Kraehenbuehl met with the Department of State, the Department of Defense, and the White House.
Earlier in Ottawa, Mr. Kraehenbuehl had presented our main 2013 operations to Canadian authorities.
In Checks and Balances, the ICRC Director of Operations speaks about his Washington visit and shares his perspective on key operational theatres like Syria and northern Mali and the nature of our confidential dialogue with the United States.
